Study Task 01 - Colour Theory - Book Genres

Colour Theory Lecturer

In this lecturer we had to get in  groups of three/four, consider how colour is most often used for the covers of fiction books from different genres. From this initial discussion, select four genres from the list below and using the Pantone colour guides to locate one dominant colour (maybe the background colour or title colour) for each genre:
  • that you believe would represent a typical cover colour choice
  • that you consider to be a less conformist yet still interesting option
As a group we began to look at the pantone colour palette and identify the colours that would
 best suit the following genres.

FairyTale: The colour pink is often used in children's books, however the colour green is not commonly seen in children books, but when you look at children movies the colours pink and green are often used in the fairytale movies.

Horror: The colour red is often used in horror as it links to the colour of blood, although the colour yellow is sometimes used on horror books but not much, the colour yellow is very alarming and like a warning sign for example road warning signs.

Romance: The colour Hot pink is a common colour used to connect with romance and lust in clothing, products, books, magazines so it was a clear choice to choose. I found it difficult to come up with a second colour, but in the end I choose the colour white as it can sometimes be seen used as text in romance novels, as white and hot pink look pleasant together.
